From the 2025-2026 NBA Preseason to the the NBA In Season Tournament, the Orlando Magic looked like a potential Eastern Conference contender, and then things seemed to simmer down for them after losing to the New York Knicks.

Watching the 2026 NBA Playoff seeding unfolding the last two weeks, The Orlando Magic were positioned to be anywhere from 6th to 9th in the Conference, and you heard talks about the team "giving up".

The top 3 Seeds in the Eastern Conference are the Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, and the New York Knicks, and as a team still working out chemistry and flow issues, the Magic probably would not fair well against the Celtics or Knicks in the first round because those two teams are very experienced.

Although the Detroit Pistons are the top overall seed, they have the least experience and have matchups that the Orlando Magic could exploit.

Tobias Harris and Duncan Robinson are really solid veterans, but there would not be very much they can do if Paolo Banchero AND Franz Wagner are playing at a high level. In fact, the Magic could manage if just one is playing extremely well, and players like Wendell Carter and Desmond Bane are having solid games.

The key factor in the series will be the play of Jalen Suggs, who will have the tall task of keeping Cade Cunningham occupied, but more importantly setting the tone on the offensice end as well to keep a very great defensive team like the Pistons honest.

If Suggs does not play well, the Magic still have a great talent like Anthony Black who could possibly step up and flash his potential at any given moment. Black has great size and skill and could put alot of pressure on the Pistons with his ablity to play uptempo.

Circling Back to the start of the season, Franz Wagner was coming off a huge summer winning a gold medal and seemed to be putting himself on the map as one of the best players in the World. If that version of Franz shows up things could get interesting not only this series, but the next one as well.

Cade Cunningham was the number 1 overall pick for a reason, and so was Paolo Banchero. With the monster season Cade just had, Paolo has opportunity to put himself firmly back in line as one of the best talents in the league. In the play-in game against the Charlotte Hornets you saw a bit of that hunger again, and if Banchero keeps growling like that the Pistons may be on the menu.
